Iran has claimed that US strikes damaged 111 petrochemical and pharmaceutical facilities across the country, also affecting industrial supply chains and the implementation of the international treaty against chemical weapons.
Addressing the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Iran’s representative Hadi Farajvand said: “US military action against Iran’s chemical industries has affected supply chains and created obstacles to implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention.”
According to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, Hadi Farajvand said the facilities affected by the US strikes include petrochemical and pharmaceutical industry sites.
Iran has previously expressed concern at the OPCW about attacks on its industrial and chemical facilities. Iranian officials argue that targeting such facilities could cause the release of hazardous chemicals, posing serious risks to public health and the environment.
Iran has warned that attacks on chemical and industrial infrastructure not only affect domestic production and supply chains, but their possible environmental effects could also reach other countries in the region.
