The European Union’s energy commissioner says “the effects of the Iran war on oil and gas markets have put the union in a ‘crisis’ because of difficulties in energy supply.”
In a letter to EU energy ministers, Dan Jørgensen said Europe is now better prepared than in the winter of 2021, when Russia cut gas supplies to the continent, but governments need to take further measures for the coming winter.
He urged member states to consider taking or continuing measures to help fill gas storage, while also reducing gas and electricity demand “for as long as necessary”.
