The joint meeting of Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in Tehran has ended.
Saudi Arabia had said the aim of the meeting was ‘to prevent escalation and pave the way to an agreement’.
During the meeting, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said: ‘If differences are resolved in a better way, and attention is given to common points and interests instead of divisive issues, the region’s problems can be overcome more easily and effectively.’
Besides the Iranian president, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also attended the meeting at Saadabad in Tehran.
The meeting was also attended by the head of Pakistan’s armed forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, the head of Turkey’s intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalın, and Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
Meanwhile, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, said the participants in the four-party meeting in Tehran agreed that regional security should be managed locally ‘without foreign interference’, and expressed the hope that Monday’s meeting would lead to ‘the start of practical change’ in forming a ‘regional alliance’.
Mohsen Rezaei took part in Monday’s meeting between senior military and intelligence officials of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey and Iranian officials.
According to BBC Persian, Mohsen Rezaei told the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB that the officials at the meeting stressed that Israel must withdraw from ‘southern Lebanon, southern Syria, Gaza and the West Bank of the Jordan River’.
The secretary of Iran’s security council also described the presence of senior military and intelligence officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in Tehran as a sign of ‘the ineffectiveness of US threats’, and expressed the hope that the meeting would, in his words, lead to ‘the start of practical change’ in forming a ‘regional alliance’.
On Monday, Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and the head of Turkey’s intelligence service, Ibrahim Kalın, arrived in Tehran, where they met Iranian officials and discussed various matters.
