Brazil’s left-wing President Lula da Silva has been elected president for the fourth time. He defeated Flávio Bolsonaro in an extremely close contest.
Addressing his supporters in São Paulo, 80-year-old Lula said: ‘Brazil will not accept being anyone’s back yard.’
The election battle was extremely hard-fought and bitter. According to observers, the result points in a different direction from the political trend towards the right in Latin America.
Right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro called the election results ‘incomprehensible’ and demanded that they be annulled.
His father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, is currently in prison, while Flávio had won the first round held this month.
On voting day, at the request of both campaigns, polling hours were extended by two hours at some polling stations.
