The legal team of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders held an important emergency press conference in Quetta, declaring the life sentence handed to BYC leader Gulzadi Baloch contrary to the basic principles of law.
Speaking at the press conference, legal team member Advocate Shoaib Mengal put shocking facts and legal details of the case before the media, revealing that Gulzadi Baloch had in fact never been named or accused in the case in which she was sentenced to life imprisonment. The lawyers said convicting and sentencing someone without naming them is an open mockery of the basic requirements of the constitution and law.
According to the legal team, Gulzadi Baloch was not even given a basic and fair opportunity to defend herself, raising serious concerns about due process, transparent court proceedings and judicial independence. They added that there is clear evidence of, and concerns about, alleged pressure on the judges during the hearing and verdict.
The BYC legal team strongly demanded that Gulzadi Baloch be given the right to a fair trial, that all the so-called court proceedings so far be impartially and independently investigated, and that her case be immediately reviewed afresh in law so that she receives justice.
